Motor Commutator
A motor commutator is a critical component in many types of electric motors, especially brushed DC motors and universal motors. It serves as a mechanical rotary switch that changes the direction of current flow in the armature windings as the motor rotates. This switching action is essential for maintaining continuous torque in the same direction, allowing the motor to keep turning smoothly.Typically, a commutator is made from a series of copper segments arranged in a cylindrical shape and insulated from one another by thin layers of mica or another insulating material. The copper segments are mounted on the rotor shaft and connected to the windings of the armature.
